What is an Article?
Articles are small words we use before nouns (things) to give more information.
There are three articles: a, an, and the.
Let's begin with "A".
A
Use "a" before a word that starts with a consonant sound.
a book
a bag
a phone
a shirt
Next up we have "AN"
AN
Use "an" before a word that starts with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u).
an apple
an umbrella
an orange
an egg
Now we have "THE"
THE
Use "the" when you are talking about one specific thing, not just any.
the bag on the table
the shoes we saw
the phone in my hand
the pen I lost
Articles help us talk clearly about which thing we mean.
Use "a" and "an" when talking about any one thing.
Use "the" when talking about a specific thing.
Check the pictures above for clarification.
