What does “can” mean?


We use can to talk about what someone is able to do.
We use can’t (cannot) to say they are not able to do it.


1. Positive Sentences with Can


Form:
Subject + can + base verb


Examples:

  • I can cook.

  • He can play tennis.

  • They can speak French.

2. Negative Sentences with Can’t


Form:
Subject + can’t + base verb


 Examples:

  • I can’t swim.

  • She can’t sing.

  • We can’t dance.

3. Questions with Can


Form:
Can + subject + base verb?


Examples:

  • Can you cook?

  • Can he drive?

  • Can they speak English?

Always use the base form of the verb after can or can’t (no -s or -ing).

Example

    She can swim very fast.

Anna: Nice! I can’t cook very well.


Tom: “Can you play any instruments?


Anna: Yes, I can play the piano. Can you?


Tom: No, I can’t play the piano, but I can play the guitar.


Anna: That’s cool. Can you dance?


Tom: Not really. I can’t dance at all!


Anna: Me neither!
