What are Questions?


Questions help us get information. There are two types:


1. Yes/No Questions


You can answer with yes or no.


Form:


(Do / Does / Is / Are / Can / Will) + subject + verb?

Examples:

  • Do you have a job? → Yes, I do.

  • Are you ready? → No, I’m not.

  • Can you work late? → Yes, I can.

  • Does she speak Spanish? → No, she doesn’t.

2. WH- Questions


These questions start with question words:
What, Where, When, Why, Who, How


Form:


WH- word + (do/does/is/are/can) + subject + verb?

Examples:

  • What do you do?

  • Where do you live?

  • When can you start?

  • Why do you want this job?

  • Who is your boss?

Example

Direction: Read the following examples with your tutor


    Yes/No Questions:

    Are you a teacher?

    Do you have any skills?

    Can you use a computer?


    WH- Questions:

    What do you do?

    Where did you work before?

    When can you begin?

    Why do you want this job?

    Who can give you a reference?

Conversation

Direction: Read the conversation aloud for the first time and then read again with your tutor


Sara is interviewing for a part-time job at a store.


Manager: Good morning! Are you Sara?


Sara: Yes, I am.


Manager: Do you have any experience in sales?


Sara: Yes, I worked in a clothing store last year.


Manager: Why do you want to work here?


Sara: I like fashion and I enjoy helping customers.


Manager: Can you work weekends?


Sara: Yes, I can.


Manager: When can you start?


Sara: I can start next Monday.


Manager: Great! Do you have any questions for me?


Sara: Yes, what are the working hours?
