What is the Present Simple?
The Present Simple is one of the most common tenses in English.
We use it to talk about:
Things that are true now
Things that happen regularly
Facts that don’t change
General truths
And even some future schedules
Let’s take a closer look at each use.
1. Let's begin with an existing truth
This means something that is true about someone or something right now.
Example:
She lives in New York.
I have two brothers.
2. Next up, we use it for regular actions
This means something you do every day, every week, or often.
Example:
I go to school every day.
He plays football on Saturdays.
These are things that happen again and again.
3. This one is used for general truths
These are things that are always true or are part of nature and science.
Example:
The sun rises in the east.
Water boils at 100°C.
4. Also, we use it for facts that don’t change easily
These are facts that stay true for a long time.
Example:
Elephants live for many years.
My school has 500 students.
5. Now we have future schedules or timetables.
We can use Present Simple to talk about future events that are planned (like bus times or classes).
Example:
My flight leaves at 6 a.m.
The train arrives at 8 p.m.
Forming the Present Simple
For I / You / We / They
Use the base verb (no -s).
Examples:
I like music.
They play games.
We go to school.
For He / She / It
Add -s or -es to the verb.
Examples:
He plays the guitar.
She watches TV.
It runs fast.
Spelling Rules for He/She/It:
play → plays
work → works
watch → watches
NOTE:
Add -es to verbs that end in -ch, -sh, -s, -x, or -o.
If the verb ends in -y after a consonant, change the y → i and add -es (like "study → studies").
Negative Form (Present Simple)
To make a negative sentence, use:
don’t for: I / you / we / they
doesn’t for: he / she / it
Examples:
I don’t play tennis.
She doesn’t work on Sunday.
We don’t like coffee.
NOTE:
Use "don’t" with: I, you, we, they
Use "doesn’t" with: he, she, it
Check the pictures above for clarification.
