What is a Verb

A verb is a word that shows what someone does or what something is.

Examples:

Action: run, eat, play

→ She runs fast.

State of being: am, is, are

→ He is happy.

In today's lesson, we are gonna look at two types of verbs. The Main and the Auxiliary verb  ( Helping Verb )

1. Main verbs.

These verbs show the action in a sentence. for example we have ( eat, sleep, go, play, read, study ).

We use them to say what someone does.

Examples:

  • I eat breakfast.

  • She goes to school.

  • They play football.

Next we are going to have AUXILIARY VERBS.

2. Auxiliary Verbs

These verbs help the main verb. There are two main classes of auxiliary verbs which are:

1. Primary auxiliaries ( do, be, have )

2. Modal auxiliaries ( may, can, will etc )

In this lesson we will focus on just "be and do".

The Verb "Be" (am, is, are)

  • You are my friend.

  • He is tired.

  • We are ready.

  • They are happy.

             The Verb "Do" and "Does"

"Do" and "Does" are forms of the verb "do". We use them to:

a. Talk about actions

b. Make questions

c. Make negative sentences

Let's break this down.
